Empathetic, Aggressive, Courageous Team Advocacy in Franklin

I took a very unconventional route to becoming a lawyer. I enjoyed a successful career in business before I took the plunge and went to law school. My prior experiences guide me daily on what it is like to be a person involved in the legal experience. I understand how frustrated clients may become when their lawyer fails to return a phone call because this has happened to me. I have experienced the anxiety of testifying in front of a jury because I have testified in the past. I know what it is like to have a thousand questions that need to be answered because I have been the client in an attorney meeting. I have enjoyed a unique life and this makes me a better lawyer.

I became a criminal defense lawyer in 2009. I joined the Criminal Defense Team on May 2, 2011. This date is important in my development as a successful attorney because it is the date I started practicing law as a member of a team. Other successful businesses I was a part of utilized a team approach to managing the company. Very few law firms share ideas to benefit the clients. Why would that be the case? Why wouldn’t all lawyers in a “firm” want to help each other out through brainstorming sessions? It boils down to economics. Most lawyers are simply trying to maximize their own profits and because their “firm” does not operate as a team, they have no incentive to help anyone else out. Rather than maximizing profits, I love being a part of a team that strives to maximize the results for our clients.

I also believe that our team approach of practicing law allows me to be more courageous for our clients. I often see other lawyers succumb to the pressures placed on them by zealous prosecutors. I love working with other lawyers who believe that normal is not good enough for our clients. We strive to get the best results. We embrace positions that other attorneys outside of our firm will not embrace because it is usually the right thing to do. It takes courage to fight when others will not. Our lawyers have that courage and we encourage each other to be courageous and to not give into the status quo. I’m proud of our successful record of fighting for our clients.

One of the favorite parts of my job is learning about my clients and their loved ones. What I do for our clients effects more than just the client. Family, wives, husbands, parents, children, friends, co-workers, and neighbors’ lives can all be changed by what happens in the court room on any given day. I take this responsibility extremely seriously and strive to always remember that I am standing next to a real person, not just a case. I often hear lawyers talking about “closing a case file.” These lawyers are looking at it the wrong way. My job is not to close a case file, my job is to help my client get past the current situation. This may seem like a subtle difference, but it is the difference of viewing the people who trust me with their freedom as human beings rather than just a number.

  • "Mike Kyle has been a mentor since I joined the Criminal Defense Team as an associate lawyer. His office is right across the hall. Several times a day, typically, I will walk into Mike’s office to help me pick apart a case or to seek a different perspective. He always enthusiastically drops what he’s doing to spend time with me. He may bring a third or fourth lawyer into the office to brainstorm. Sometimes he will walk into my office to also pick my brain. Mike personifies what “teamwork” is all about. He gives much of himself because he knows in the end that obtaining the best outcome for our client is really dependent upon the teamwork of our lawyers and staff.” – Matt Price, Associate lawyer for the Criminal Defense Team of Baldwin Kyle & Kamish, PC
